On October 16, 2025, World Food Day was celebrated in a grand manner at the Theepam Centre, Alesgarden, jointly organized by Trincomalee EHED Caritas and the Department of Agriculture, Trincomalee District. The event commenced with an awareness rally that started from the Divine Mercy Shrine premises and proceeded to the Theepam Centre. Staff members of EHED Caritas, officers of the Department of Agriculture, facilitators, volunteers, and beneficiaries from both institutions enthusiastically participated in the rally.
Distinguished guests who graced the occasion included Rev. Fr. Dr. B. Paul Robinson, Directo r of EHED Caritas, Mrs. Thusanthini, representative of the Department of Agriculture, Mr. S. Shiyam Sundar, Chief Public Health Inspector of Uppuweli, and Mr. S. Yogendran, Regional Environmental Officer of the Central Environmental Authority. Their presence added great value to the celebration.
Addressing the gathering, Rev. Fr.Dr.B.Paul Robinson stated that “around 72% of the people in Trincomalee are still struggling to obtain adequate nutritious food. Therefore, it is our collective responsibility to ensure food security and nutrition for all.” He further emphasized the importance of reducing food waste, protecting natural resources, and promoting environmentally sustainable agricultural practices.
As part of the program, awareness sessions on food security, nutrition, environmental protection, and sustainable agriculture were conducted under the guidance of resource persons. Mr. S. Yogendran, Mrs. Thusanthini, and Mr. S. Shiyam Sundar served as facilitators and shared their valuable knowledge and expertise with the participants. Their presentations inspired and educated the audience on sustainable living and healthy food practices. We formed the federation on the same day.
