Capacity Building on Home Gardening – Compost Making

The session was facilitated by Mr. M.C. Marzook, on May 21st, 2025, the Agricultural Instructor responsible for the Kinniya division. This training aimed to improve the practical knowledge and technical skills of beneficiaries in establishing and managing sustainable home gardens. Key topics covered during the session included: Layout and planning of a home garden, Common challenges in home gardening and how to overcome them, the importance of home gardening in enhancing family nutrition and livelihood, Seed sowing techniques and planting methods, Basic soil testing and compost preparation, and Demonstration of organic fertilizer making.

A notable highlight of the session was the awareness provided on government subsidy schemes. The participants were informed that farmers in their area can now obtain water-lifting machines by paying only 50% of the cost, while the remaining amount will be covered by the government. This valuable information helped build trust and stronger linkages between local farmers and government agricultural services.

The training concluded with a hands-on demonstration on how to prepare organic fertilizer using locally available materials. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing appreciations for the practical, real-life guidance provided. This initiative not only built confidence among the participants but also empowered them to take the next steps in cultivating sustainable home gardens for the well-being of their families and communities.
